Since the turn of the century, people have
been discovering the joys of the Cushman area. They came by steamship, stage and lake boat
to the famous old Antlers Hotel on the original lake. In 1925, Tacoma City Light built the
first dam on the North Fork of the Skokomish to form the present 10 mile long lake with
over 23 miles of shoreline. A new resort, camping, fishing, hiking and hunting were the
major activities during the second quarter century. In 1930, another dam was built to form
the 2 1/2 mile long Lake Kokanee. |

In 1966, greater public enjoyment of Lake
Cushman was made possible when the City of Tacoma reached an agreement with the Lake
Cushman Company to develop a unique buy-lease program for surplus lands around the lake.
This was a unique combination of public access, private use and environmental protection. |
